Why make life difficult when you can do it more simply and sustainably?

By using a garment steamer and washing less often, you’re helping to protect the environment and extending the life of your clothes. This article explains the environmental benefits of steam ironing.

1. Less water wastage

Each washing machine cycle uses an average of 60 litres of water. With an average of 220 cycles a year, that adds up to a staggering 13,200 litres of water a year. By using a garment steamer more often instead of washing, you can significantly reduce this water wastage.

2. Lower energy consumption

The temperature of a wash cycle has a significant impact on energy consumption. A low-temperature cycle (20 or 30 degrees) saves energy whilst still cleaning your laundry. The lower the temperature, the lower the electricity consumption. With a garment steamer, you avoid this energy consumption altogether.

3. Reduced plastic pollution

When washing synthetic garments, tiny plastic fibres are released; these are not biodegradable and are harmful to the environment. Each wash cycle can release up to 700,000 microplastics. By freshening up your clothes with a garment steamer, you prevent the release of these harmful particles.

An alternative way to freshen up your clothes is to hang them out in the open air or steam them. Odours disappear and, provided there are no stains, there’s no need to wash them.
