Winter coats are often made from durable, high-quality materials such as wool, cashmere or down. Beautiful and warm, but also difficult to keep clean. A quick wash isn’t usually an option, and dry cleaning can be expensive and damaging to the fabric. Fortunately, there are ways to keep your coat fresh and tidy without having to rush straight to the dry cleaner’s.
- Air it out regularly
A simple but effective step: hang your coat out in the open air regularly, preferably on a dry day with a bit of fresh air. This helps to eliminate musty odours and allows the fibres to breathe again. Avoid direct sunlight, as this could cause the colours to fade.
- Treat stains straight away
Minor accidents? Always dab a stain as soon as possible with a damp cloth and a mild detergent. Rubbing can damage the fabric, so it’s best to dab gently. This will prevent the stain from setting in and requiring an expensive wash.
- Use a garment steamer
A garment steamer is ideal for freshening up your winter coat quickly and safely. The hot steam removes creases and unpleasant odours, whilst killing bacteria. All without putting strain on the fabric, as happens with washing or chemical treatments.
- For home use, a model such as the Jiffy J-2000 is perfect: easy to use and gentle on delicate fabrics.
- For more intensive use, for example in a shop or a tailor’s, a Jiffy J-4000 offers a powerful solution.
- Store with care
When the season is over, it’s important to store your coat properly. Use a breathable storage bag (not plastic!) and hang the coat on a sturdy hanger to maintain its shape. If necessary, add a cedarwood sachet to keep moths at bay.
